The December program for the First Defenders Civil War Round Table is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8th, at Giannotti’a Country Restaurant with dinner being served at 6:30 PM and the business meeting and program getting underway at about 7:30.
Due to an ongoing inability to confirm arrangements with our planned speaker, long-time member Denton Schucker will step up to the podium with a discussion on “The Army of the Potomac – Part 1.” Focusing on the development of the premier Union field force in the wake of Fort Sumter, Denton will talk about how the Army of the Potomac was formed, trained, bloodied, trained some more and spent time in garrison duties until it was transported to Fortress Monroe in the spring of 1862 at the start of the Peninsular Campaign. It would be this Army three years later that would bring the Civil War to a close at Appomattox, but it had matured considerably from the heady days of 1861. This outing will mark Denton’s second presentation to the Round Table.
Current conditions indicate this program will be both in-person and available virtually. However, the uptick in COVID over the last few weeks and state government responses may result in our plans being upended. Stay tuned to the website for updated information!
